How Healthcare Workers Can Find Support Through Counselling

With over 20 years of experience as a Registered Nurse, I understand your needs. I recently transitioned to a career in Counselling to pursue my passion for horses and the great outdoors, and to help others through my expertise.

Connecting Through Shared Experience

  • Changing careers is a huge step. Leaving a stable income, studying again, and starting a new business in a difficult economy is not for the faint-hearted! However, as we know, nurses are persistent and resilient creatures!

  • Although I have always been a nurse, trying new things wasn't a new experience. I have moved to Australia from the UK. I moved around quite a bit in the UK and have done so here too. I have worked in multiple roles within nursing such as GP clinics, ICU, A&E, agency nursing, Nurse Educator, Clinical Governance and Aged Care Manager to name but a few.

  • Outside of nursing, I became a farmer after I moved from the UK to Australia. I learned how to drive a tractor, work with cattle and sheep, and owned a free-range piggery business for a few years. This is relevant because we often forget that we are more than just healthcare workers. We wear many hats, both at work and in our private lives. We are flexible, talented, and constantly learning.

  • It's important to build rapport, especially when choosing to see a therapist, which can be a difficult decision for healthcare workers. You don't want to have to teach them your language. As a former nurse turned counsellor, I have experienced shift work and understand the challenges. I know what it's like to work long hours, miss breaks, wear full PPE, deal with understaffing, and feel a sense of achievement when you finally manage to control a patient's pain. I also understand the complexities of privacy and confidentiality in rural areas.

Understanding the Needs of Healthcare Professionals

  • Healthcare workers face unique mental health challenges due to high-stress environments, long hours, and exposure to traumatic events. We often experience burnout, anxiety, and depression, exacerbated by the emotional demands of patient care and the pressure of making critical decisions. The stigma around seeking mental health support within the profession can further hinder our well-being.

  • In the medical field, seeking counselling is often stigmatized. As an RN, I saw colleagues hesitate to seek help, fearing it might be seen as a sign of weakness or incompetence. I suffered reactive depression to a situation and was very reluctant to seek help. I chose to take a break from nursing rather than seek support. Getting counselling didn't even cross my mind! This stigma can prevent healthcare professionals from addressing their mental health needs, leading to burnout and decreased job performance. It's crucial to normalize, seeking support to ensure the well-being of those who care for others.

  • As a former RN, I understand that traditional therapy might not always resonate with healthcare professionals. The fast-paced, high-stress environment we work in can make it challenging to open up in conventional therapy settings. Many of us prefer practical, solution-focused approaches that directly address the unique pressures of our roles. Tailoring therapy to fit our specific experiences and needs can lead to more effective and relatable support. The expectation used to be that we relied on coffee and dark humour to get through challenging times but thankfully, for the future of our healthcare workers, times are changing and the need for mental health support is recognized.

Bridging the Gap

  • Given my background as a former nurse, I blend my nursing expertise into the counselling process by merging clinical knowledge with therapeutic techniques. This dual perspective enables me to comprehend the distinctive difficulties that healthcare professionals encounter, including stress, burnout, and compassion fatigue. Drawing upon my medical experience, I can develop practical, empathetic, and pertinent strategies that resonate with healthcare workers, thus fostering a stronger connection and providing more effective support.

  • As an ex-nurse, I understand the specific stressors and emotions healthcare workers face, such as long hours, high-pressure environments, and the emotional toll of patient care. This insight allows me to provide targeted support, helping healthcare workers navigate their unique challenges more effectively. My background ensures a deeper empathy and tailored strategies, leading to more meaningful and practical therapy outcomes.

  • I know how vital it is to speak your language. I relate to terms like "patient-centered care," "evidence-based practices," and "clinical outcomes". This shared language validates your experiences and knowledge, making you feel understood and respected. By bridging the gap between therapy and the medical field, we can create a more effective and meaningful therapeutic experience.
